Automation Testing / SDET

Design good tests, then automate them across the UI, the API and the database

  • Intermediate
  • Live online
  • 72 live hours

What you will be able to do

  • Derive test cases systematically with equivalence partitioning, boundary values, decision tables and state transitions
  • Write clear, reproducible bug reports with evidence
  • Automate reliable browser tests with Playwright locators, web-first assertions and auto-waiting
  • Structure a framework with page objects, custom fixtures and managed test data
  • Test REST APIs and verify stored data with SQL in the same suite

  • Investigate and fix flaky tests, and add visual, accessibility and basic load checks

About this course

Automated tests are only as good as the test design behind them. This course starts with how testers decide what to test — equivalence partitioning, boundary values, decision tables, state transitions and risk — and how to write a bug report a developer can act on. Then it turns those designs into a maintainable automation framework.

Classes are live and hands-on. You work against a realistic practice application — a small course-booking web app with a REST API and a PostgreSQL database — so every session checks behaviour the way a real team would: through the browser, through the API and in the stored data. Doubt-clearing time is built into every week, and the framework you build grows module by module into your capstone.

Why Playwright with TypeScript? Playwright waits for elements automatically, runs Chromium, Firefox and WebKit from one API, isolates every test in a fresh browser context, and ships with a test runner, parallel execution, an HTML report and a trace viewer — so you spend time on test design instead of wiring tools together. TypeScript catches mistakes in test code before it runs and is the language most web teams already use.

What about Selenium? Selenium WebDriver remains common in existing projects. We compare the two approaches as they come up, and one session is dedicated to reading and understanding Selenium code so you can work on a team that still uses it.

Schedules and batches

Choose the schedule that fits your week. Both teach the same syllabus and the same 72 live hours; only the number of weeks differs.

Schedule comparison for Automation Testing / SDET
ScheduleDaysLive hours a weekClassesLength before holidays
Weekday IntensiveMon–Fri, 1 h each572about 15 weeks
Weekend EveningSat & Sun evenings, 2 h each436about 18 weeks
  • Weekday Intensive classes are one hour, so each 2 h syllabus session is taught across consecutive weekday classes.
  • Weekend Evening classes run on Saturday and Sunday evenings; the exact time and time zone are set before a batch is confirmed.
  • Public holidays are not class days unless the instructor confirms a class. Holidays, instructor leave and cancelled classes move the end date later so no live hours are lost.
  • Plan about 5 hours a week of exercises, assignments and project work outside class.
  • Group, Duo and One-to-One courses all follow one of these two schedules.

Final project

Build a test automation framework for a course-booking application. You receive the application, its API documentation and read access to its PostgreSQL database. You deliver:

  • A short test strategy: the risks you identified, what you automate at the UI, API and database levels and why, and what you deliberately leave manual.
  • Test cases derived with at least three design techniques, traced to the requirements they cover.
  • A Playwright and TypeScript framework in a Git repository with page objects, custom fixtures, environment configuration and test data that is created and cleaned up by the tests.
  • UI journeys for sign-up, search, booking and cancellation; API tests including negative and authorisation cases; SQL checks that the stored data matches what the UI and API reported.
  • An accessibility scan and at least one visual comparison on key pages, plus a small k6 script with thresholds for the booking API.
  • A GitHub Actions workflow that runs the suite in parallel on every push and publishes the HTML report and traces.
  • Two bug reports for real defects planted in the application, and a short note on one flaky test you diagnosed and fixed.

Reviewed live in the final week: you walk through the framework, run it in CI and answer questions about your design choices.

Questions about Automation Testing / SDET

How long is Automation Testing / SDET?

72 hours of live online teaching: about 15 weeks on the Weekday Intensive schedule (Mon–Fri, 1 h a class), or about 18 weeks on the Weekend Evening schedule (Sat & Sun evenings, 2 h a class), before holidays. Plan about 5 hours a week of exercises and project work as well.

When are the classes?

No batch dates have been announced yet. The proposed pattern is Tue, Thu and Sat, 7:30–9:30 pm IST; it is confirmed when a batch is scheduled. Book a free consultation to hear about the next batch.

What do I need before I start?
  • Basic programming in any language: variables, conditions, loops and functions
  • Familiarity with using web applications and browser developer tools is helpful
  • Basic SQL (SELECT with WHERE and joins) is helpful; a short refresher is included
  • A laptop that can run Node.js, VS Code and modern browsers (Windows, macOS or Linux; 8 GB RAM recommended)
  • A free GitHub account for the CI module
Will I get a certificate?

Yes — a ZORK Academy course completion certificate when you meet this course’s requirements, listed under Certificate. Paying for the course does not by itself earn the certificate, and it is not a university or government-recognised qualification.

Are classes recorded?

Where the academy has permission to record a class, the recording may be shared with your batch for revision. Recordings do not replace live classes, and attendance counts towards the certificate.

How do I pay?

The fee is a one-time payment in Indian rupees through Razorpay once online enrolment opens; ZORK Academy never sees your card or UPI details. The fee shown is proposed and may change before enrolment opens. Refunds follow the refund and cancellation policy in force when you pay.
